STUDENTS
Students at Battle Creek Christian School come from over 40 different churches from many denominations in the Battle Creek area. Minorities make up about 20% of the student body. An excellent academic program is offered for Kindergarten through 8th grades with pre school classes offered for three- and four- years olds and a Young Fives program available for older four-year olds and young five-year olds needing additional challenges. The Kindergarten class meets three full days each week. On-site daycare is available for preschoolers and kindergarten children. Before- and after-school care is also available for school-aged children through age 12.

STAFF
All Kindergarten through 8th grade teachers at BCCS are certified by the State of Michigan and hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Some have also received a Master’s degree in education and others are currently working toward their advanced degrees.

The administrator oversees the day-to-day operations at the school, provides leadership to the instructional staff, and offers advice to board members on instructional matters.

PARENT EXPECTATIONS
Parents are an integral part in the education process of students at BCCS. Teachers communicate regularly with parents regarding the progress of the child in the classroom, and they foster a close relationship between school and the parents.

PARENT SERVICE HOURS
Several studies have shown an increase in student performance when parents/guardians participate in school activities in even small ways.

Each family is expected to donate 20 hours of service time to the school yearly. A $200 charge for these hours is added to the tuition charge. When the obligation is met, the amount is deducted from the tuition for that school year.

Families can fulfill this service requirement in many ways both at the school during school hours and at home during non-school hours.

SCHOOL BOARD
BCCS is the only privately run, totally parent-controlled school in the Battle Creek area. A nine-member board is made up of parents and other supporters of BCCS who are elected by the Battle Creek Christian School Society.

The Board holds the responsibility and authority for all policy decisions. It also establishes income and expense budgets.

BCCS SOCIETY
Elections for school board members are held at the annual BCCS Society meeting. Parents and supporters may become Society members by signing an agreement with the BCCS statement of faith. The Society also votes on the proposed tuition schedule and proposed expense budget for the coming year.

HISTORY
BCCS opened its doors over 50 years ago. In 1951, a group of parents met to
pursue ways of providing their children with the type of education they felt was God’s requirement for them as parents.

In 1958, a building fund was established, and land was purchased. The construction process for a two-classroom structure began in February 1958. In the fall of 1958, the doors were opened to the first students, and one teacher was hired for grades 1 through 6. A building expansion in 1965 offered kindergarten for the first time. In 1977, a preschool class was offered. High enrollment in 1982-83 was the deciding factor in the addition of four classrooms and additional rest rooms. An all-purpose gymnasium was added in 1985.

CURRENT FACILITIES
Today’s facilities at BCCS include seven classrooms, a large library, computer lab, an art/music room, and space for daycare. Hot lunches are served three days a week in a fully equipped kitchen and cafeteria. A fenced play ground of approximately four acres is equipped with a basketball court. soft ball diamond, and soccer field as well as playground equipment and structures located on a wood chip underlay.

The on-site daycare center provides wrap-around care for preschoolers. Before-school care, after-school care, and full-time summer care is also available for school-aged children.
