INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
The goal of BCCS is to produce thinkers who can go into God’s world and transform it. In addition to the core subjects of math, science, Bible, history, social studies, and language arts being taught at Battle Creek Christian School, music, art, technology, physical education, and current events are also offered. Lessons are integrated across all the subject areas, teaching students to see God’s hand in all subjects and to develop discernment.

SPECIAL EVENTS SUPPORT ACADEMICS
The annual Student Expo offers an opportunity for the students to exhibit their talents in art, writing and science. All kindergarten through 8 grade students participate with 3 through 8 grade students required to submit an individual science project of their choice. Science and writing entries are judged by third-party judges and used as a major portion of the grade for one marking period. The best science and writing projects are entered at the area Student Expo where students compete with other area students.

Other events that challenge the students are the geography bee, spelling bee, and author opportunities.

Field trips often support classroom studies as well. These trips range from a visit to the fire station when studying community helpers to trips to Jackson’s Space Museum and the capitol in Lansing to support the unit titled “God’s Image Bearers in Michigan.” One of the popular destinations is downtown Battle Creek to attend special presentations at the Discovery Theatre.

The bus is often used to provide transportation for these trips, but parents are always encouraged to participate as well.

LIBRARY
Every class spends time in the library each week. A variety of literary styles and subjects are presented to the students to foster an appreciation and interest in read ing. Students are encouraged to check out books of their own choosing.

Each year the month of March is designated as Reading Month with a variety of activities planned to encourage the students to spend time reading their favorite books.

TECHNOLOGY
Computer technology will hold an important place in the lives of today’s students. Computers with age-appropriate software are located in every classroom.

The computer lab is equipped with desktop computers. Keyboarding skills are taught beginning in Kindergarten. These skills are expanded in each successive grade.

HIGH TEST SCORES
BCCS uses NWEA's Measures of Academic Progress testing. Look for statisical data soon!

You can read about this test at NWEA's website here.

SMALL CLASS SIZES
The average class size over the past several years has been about 16 students to each teacher. Because of the low student- teacher ratio, the classroom teachers are able to individualize the instruction for the varying abilities of their students, helping them reach their God-given potential.

In addition to the focus on academics, the teachers at BCCS care about the personal and spiritual growth of their students as well. They pray for their students regularly.

SPECIAL NEEDS
Special services, such as vision and hearing testing, speech therapy, El and EMI, and the LD classroom are provided through cooperation with Pennfield Public Schools. Students are transported via public school bus for some of these services.
